NATO claimed success as they flooded Libya with weapons and "special advisors" amid denials of blowing up civilians. Under UNSC Resolution 1973, they entered the sovereign nations airspace, waters and lands. Their remit was to "use all nessasary measures to protect civilians". NATO's 9,658 strike sorties were used not only to protect civilians, but to destroy infrastructure, and search and destroy the nations security forces. And assassinate Gaddafi and his family, much to the condemnation of Russia and China and international law. Civilian deaths are estimated at 25,000-30,000 civilians. Gaddafi was tortured and murdered and his corpse displayed like an animal carcass. Human rights were terrible under Gaddafi, but the Western-backed NTC(National Transition Council) also has a shocking record so far.
Libya has witnessed bands of rebels loot and pillage as they moved on Tripoli, with many residents still helpless to protect family and property. Lawless gun battles break out regularly and security for the so-called "protected civilians" is worthless. Tripoli is divided by opposing occupying rebel forces, reminiscent of Monrovia during Charles Taylor's civil war.
Gadaffi's once prosperous country, the beacon of all Africa, is now fractured, with the newly unelected, western-backed government appearing willing to seize Libya's resources and sell them off for their profit. I doubt oil money will be shared among the nation as before...
And the winners so far are...Repsol, Total, BP, Eni, Glencore , the Swiss-based trading giants Vitol, Gunvor and Trafigura, and China's Sinopec and Petrochina.
